Background: The Pioneer was built, at great expense, during the initial exploration and development of Cygnus, when jumpgates first started to come into use. The overall design is simple, but her size alone is a monument among many monuments to the Cygnian chandlers. The largest ship in Cygnian service, able to carry materials for building two jumpgates and carrying her own jump engines as well, Pioneer also has the largest mobile rotational gravity section in CSA service -- a 'hamster wheel' centrifuge -- and the largest crew capacity. Currently, however, she is considerably undermanned. There are plans for eventually constructing a sister-ship of this class, the Voyager, but there is no current need -- or resources -- for a second jumpgate tender. Her motto is taken from the old US Navy Construction Battalions, a motto that is also unofficially claimed by the CSA Corps of Engineers, who make up the largest percentage of the Pioneer's complement.
