Description: Multi-role destroyer.
Background: The Black Star was, according to official reports, built at a covert mutineer facility for the express purpose of performing as devastating a first strike upon Tandara as possible. This was in express violation of command directives, rules of engagement, and national policy. Following the cessation of the mutiny during the Star's End incident, Black Star was towed back to Cygnus after an abortive raid on the outer marches of Tandara. There was a great deal of heated debate surrounding the disposition of the CSA Black Star. Some felt it was too powerful a symbol; indeed, her motto -- 'Our Sector, Ourselves,' hearkened back to the Sinn Fein, a political group roughly aligned with the infamous Irish Republican Army. The other view won out, that the CSA could ill afford to waste any resources, including and especially ships. The ship was towed by the Darktower to the Starforge Shipyards, where a complete engineering analysis was conducted prior to the ship being refitted for service. The quality of work was of course lower than most CSA ships, and she lacked synthetic gravity. Nevertheless, she was refit as best as possible, and was rechristened the CSA Excalibur, 'Fidelity Through Sword and Fire.' She entered service assigned to the newly-formed Taskforce Hunter alongside the CSA Darktower and the CSA Jennifer Brisby, forming a power-projection force capable of undertaking a variety of mission roles.
